| The Flechette was introduced in the First World War by the French, who dropped them from aircraft onto troops on the ground. The SPIW Project, SPIW for Special Purpose Individual Weapons, project was from 1957 to 1966, after 42 companies were given information to compete in 1962, only 10 companies submitted proposals. The program was dropped by the military in 1966. There were four principal cartridges accepted by the military, XM110 (5.6x53 'piston primed'), XM144 (5.6x44), XM645 and the cartridge XM216 The XM 110 (this cartridge) was developed by AAI and Winchester for the first phase of testing in the project.
