The 50 Alaskan was developed by Harold Johnson and Harold Fuller of the Kenai Peninsula of Alaska in the 1950s. Harold Johnson necked out the .348 WCF case to 50 cal, and Harold Fuller
developed the barrel, marrying a 50 cal barrel to an old Model 1886 rifle. This Big fellow cartridge started out as a true wildcat cartridge. It is now produced by Grizzly Cartridge Co., and Buffalo Bore Co., so it is now a Proprietary Rifle Cartridge used in custom lever action rifles made by only a few fine custom gun shops. I read this information and extremely condensed it from an article by Dave Scovill in Rifle Magazine. @ ( http://www.z-hat.com/The%20Fifty.htm ) Issue #214, July-August 2004. It is not in the book, Cartridges of the World, 11th edition. |
