| 5.45x39mm Russian |
| The Russian Government designed and introduced the 5.45x39mm in 1974, possibly in response to the 5.56x45mm NATO (.223) cartridge used in the M-16 or AR-15. Like the 5.56 NATO the projectile is long and slender to provide very good accuracy but will tumble on impact for maximum damage. The 5.45x39mm is used in the AK-74, basically the same as the AK-47, which is chambered in the heavier 7.62x39mm Russian. Both are great military rifles. |

The case is slender with the neck at .245" in diameter and the case tapers from .364" to .390", with the rim at .391" in diameter. It is a thick rim at .054". |
