| The 44 Auto Mag cartridge was designed by the late Harry Sanford, (Auto Mag Corporation President in California) and the cartridge was introduced in 1971 for the 44 AMP pistol (Auto Mag Pistol). Only 3,000 pistols were produced and the company declared bankruptcy in 1972. The cartridge is basically a 30-06 or .308 case, cut down and trimmed to a length of 1.298 inches. It is basically rimless 44 Magnum cartridge, (see below picture: the right two cartridges are 44 Auto Mag vs 44 Magnum: rimmed) and have almost the same ballistics. Other then custom made cartridges from 30-06 or 308 cases, the only production loaded ammunition was by 2 companies : Norma of Sweden and Cartuchos Deportivos Mexico (CDM) see below. This cartridge and firearms are now long obsolete. |
