357 Smith & Wesson Magnum, aka 357 Mag.
t
The 357 Smith & Wesson Magnum, AKA; 357 Magnum or 357 MAG was developed by
Major Douglas Wesson and Philip Sharpe and introduced in 1935 by Smith & Wesson for
the heavy-frame revolver.
The cartridge is based on a 38 S&W Special lengthened by 1/10 of an inch, so it would not
be chambered in the lower pressure 38 Special revolvers.
At the time of it's introduce it was the most powerfully revolver cartridge until the
44 Remington Magnum introduction in 1955.
The 357 Magnum was and still is a popular cartridge with law enforcement, hunting
and target shooters.
