This cartridge was introduced by Hornady in 2002 and was an instant success. Hornady gave shooters a serious varmint cartridge that can easily take game at 200 yards. Basically the 17 HMR is a 22 WMR (Winchester Magnum Rimfire) necked down to .17 caliber, although the 22 WMR case is slightly thicker by a few hundredths of a millimeter. The 17 grain V-MAX projectile does 2550 feet per second, and the 20 grain XTP does 2375 feet per second, with pressures only a little higher then the 22 WMR: Winchester Magnum Rimfire. Today most of the major ammunition makers are producing this caliber and most large firearms makers are chambering it in rifles and revolvers. It does smoke! |
